We joke around a lot on this blog, but let me briefly interrupt your amusement for a public service announcement.
Before we went to the river yesterday, my dad went to Kaiser to get a booster shot vaccination. Apparently there's an outbreak in California of whooping cough, or pertussis, which is a contagious disease that's especially harmful to newborns and infants.
Not many people are aware of the situation -- including many people at the hospital, considering daddy had to inform some of them -- but it was mentioned in The Bee yesterday and on public radio this morning. So if you're a parent or grandparent of any young child, or you just want to hold me a lot, ask your doctor about getting a booster shot before the disease peaks in August.
We've gone out a bit in the last few days, but my parents are avoiding crowded places and trying to limit close contact with adults until my immune system gets stronger. Looks like my Slugs softball debut will have to wait at least another week or two.
Tyler and I both got the pertussis boosters at Alex's 4-month check-up last week. It still hurts like a mother. The things we do for our children :-)
ReplyDeleteCool. My arm still feels sore, too. Glad that your pediatrician is aware of the situation. I wrote Kaiser an e-mail suggesting that they need to be more proactive, considering we read about it first in the newspaper. (Glad we still have newspapers!)
